PLATTSBURGH, N.Y., July 7, 2004 --- Thousands of shoppers from throughout Clinton County are expected to converge on Plattsburgh’s new 24-hour Wal-Mart Supercenter, which will celebrate its grand opening July 14 at 8:00 a.m. on 25 Consumer Square.
In addition to the announcement of community grants and introduction of store managers, the grand opening ceremony will feature a presentation of colors by members of the American Legion. Pepsi will host a cookout with free giveaways from local vendors, including Bluebunnys Ice Cream. Mayor Dan Stewart, Town Supervisor Andy Abdallak, Fire Chief Dennis Seymour and the Morrisonville Rescue Squad will be on hand for the morning ceremony.
The Plattsburgh Wal-Mart Supercenter, encompassing nearly 208,000 square feet of retail space and employing approximately 450 associates, will offer customers a full line of groceries and general merchandise under one roof at Wal-Mart’s signature Every Day Low Prices.
A number of specialty shops will be housed in the new Supercenter, including a vision center, snack bar, Smart Style hair salon, one-hour photo-processing lab, portrait studio, pharmacy and deli. The Supercenter also will feature eight self-checkout lanes.
For the grand opening, Wal-Mart associates will contribute more than $15,000 to area non-profit organizations through Wal-Mart’s Good.Works. community involvement program. Last year, Wal-Mart contributed $7.2 million to New York community organizations.

The Plattsburgh Wal-Mart Supercenter associate team will be led by store manager Kurt Herkert and co-managers Chris McAfee and Greg Perkins. Wal-Mart operates 54 Supercenters, four Wal-Mart discount stores, and 18 SAM’S CLUBS in New York and employs more than 31,000 associates in the state.Since it opened its first New York store in 1991, Wal-Mart has injected millions of dollars into New York’s economy as the company builds new stores and expands employment. In the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2002, Wal-Mart collected and paid $205 million in sales taxes and paid $37.8 million in state and local taxes.
